Learn to Cross Stitch Workshop
Looking for a creative project that travels well — something you can pick up whenever inspiration strikes? Cross stitch embroidery is a beautiful way to slow down, work with your hands, and create something meaningful with minimal setup.
This beginner-friendly, 3-hour evening workshop is designed for those with no experience or novices looking to improve their skills.
When:
This single-evening class runs from 6 PM – 9 PM. We suggest arriving at 5:30 to get settled. Choose from one of our available dates at checkout.
If your preferred session is sold out, contact us to be added to the waitlist — we often open extra sessions once enough students are interested or if a spot opens up.
Where:
The Hemme Studio is located at 39 Milford Avenue in the Castlefield Design District in Toronto, Canada. This is an in-person workshop, we are not doing virtual classes at this time.
What you will learn and make:
- You will set up and start this beautiful Alphabet sampler piece and learn how to complete it on your own at home (perfect holiday or baby gift!)
- How to read a cross stitch pattern
- How to prepare your materials, set up and how to work with a frame
- Secrets to effective and perfect stitches (with a satisfyingly tidy and clean back to your work)
- How to blend or colour block your thread for different effects
- Quick tips on how to stretch and frame your work
Your Instructor: Johanna Masko
Johanna has been teaching sewing, quilting, and fibre arts for over 20 years. She’s passionate about textiles and helping others express themselves through craft. (Photo: Walter Masko)
Supplies you will need:
- 6-strand embroidery floss, in one or more colours (DMC, Cosmo, OR Coats)
- 14 count Aida cloth, light colour, 10" x 12" minimum size (Hemme will have some on hand to purchase)
- 8" Q-Snap cross stitch frame (or other brand of square, tubular plastic frame like “Loops and Threads” which are easy to find at craft stores or online).
- Small scissors or snips for fabric and thread snipping
- Size 24 Tapestry needle (Hemme will have some on hand to purchase). This needle has a dull end, so it won't snag the cloth. Regular hand sewing needles will not be suitable.
- Needle threader (optional)
What we will provide:
- Johanna will provide a copy of her original pattern for this project. Other patterns may be available to purchase
- Round embroidery hoops if you forget your cross stitch frame
- Some supplies to purchase: embroidery floss, needles and Aida cloth
What if I can't make the class?
The workshop is non-refundable. We understand that things come up, if we are able to fill your spot, we can provide a credit towards another workshop at a later date (let us know as soon as possible as we can't guarantee we can fill your spot!)
