Learn to Sew Workshop: Machine Sewing for Beginners
Our next Learn to Sew Workshop will be in January. Get on the list to be notified of upcoming dates and new workshops.
workshopDiscover the joy of making something beautiful with your own hands. This 3-hour evening workshop is designed for absolute beginners — whether you’ve never threaded a machine or it’s been years since your last stitch.
You’ll leave with new skills and a finished piece to show off — plus, fair warning, a budding fabric addiction and a growing stash of remnants. Come for the craft, stay for the creativity (and the good company).
When:
This single-evening class runs from 6 PM – 9 PM. We suggest arriving at 5:30 to get settled. Choose from one of our available dates at checkout.
If your preferred session is sold out, contact us to be added to the waitlist — we often open extra sessions once enough students are interested or if a spot opens up.
Where:
The Hemme Studio is located at 39 Milford Avenue in the Castlefield Design District in Toronto, Canada. This is an in-person workshop, we are not doing virtual classes at this time.
What you will learn and make:
- How to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin
- How to sew straight and zigzag seams
- The basics of cutting, pinning and seam allowances
- How to cut and sew an 16" x 16" envelope-style pillow cover — no zipper required!
- How to fit your pillow cover to an insert
Your Instructor: Johanna Masko
Johanna has been teaching sewing, quilting, and fibre arts for over 20 years. She’s passionate about textiles and helping others express themselves through craft. (Photo: Walter Masko)
Supplies you will need:
- 1/2 meter of decorative fabric (lightweight home decor fabric or quilting cottons). Not sure if your fabric will work? Email us — or browse our in-studio remnants available for purchase. Working with remnants? You’ll need a minimum of 20" x 44" piece.
- Fabric scissors
- Snips for cutting threads
- Straight pins (glass ball headed preferred)
- 16" x 16" Pillow insert: you can bring your own or you can purchase from us
- Sewing Machine: It's always best to learn on your own machine — but if you don’t have one, we’ll provide one for you — it’s a great way to test-drive this new hobby
What we will provide:
- Thread
- An iron and ironing station
- Remnant fabrics and pillow inserts available for purchase
What if I can't make the class?
The workshop is non-refundable. We understand that things come up, if we are able to fill your spot, we can provide a credit towards another workshop at a later date (let us know as soon as possible as we can't guarantee we can fill your spot!)
